1. Find Your Niche

It is much easier to market to one specific group of people and focus your advertising dollars, website and everything else to that one thing. Sure, you can do other work, but having that focus will be beneficial.

When you first start photographing, you are most likely to going to shoot anything you can. You may dabble in weddings, family portraits and anything else someone would hire you for. If seniors are something you do very regularly and you want to focus on them, Keala recommends in this eBook to make the switch quickly and put 110% into it. Some photographers tend to slowly transition to their niche.... still shooting weddings or family portraits here or there and while that is okay, it takes away from your focus of seniors.

2. Market to Teens

When you are a senior portrait photographer, while you want to get the word out to parents who have students, you really do want to focus some of your marketing directly to the teens. Keala says that the best place to find teens is on Twitter. Be sure that your business is on Twitter and is active on there so you can reach as many potential customers as you can!

It is also important to get out and go to where the seniors are. Go to school sporting events in your town, or even work with other vendors to help cross-promote each other. Think about hairstylist or a local boutique that sells prom dresses. Working to promote each other would be very beneficial because these are places that teens will be visiting!

2 Factors To Consider When Photographing Senior Girls

1. Facial Expressions

Facial expressions are one of the most important keys to a good portrait. The senior girl you are photographing can be so perfectly posed, but if she has a weird expression on her face, the whole image is ruined.

You can have your model go with a serious look, that you do not want to look angry but more so relaxed and you want it truly to be all about their eyes. Many times, when they are trying to be serious, they will either nail that expression perfectly, or they will feel silly and start laughing, which is another great facial expression to capture. The best smile you can capture in a photo is a natural one.

2. Incorporate Hobbies Or Other Interests

When you are able to incorporate the subjects hobbies or interests into their senior photos, it is really when you get to showcase who they really are. Many times, that will involve having a prop with them, whether it be a guitar, books, or even the sport or activity they do such as dancing, soccer or anything else. Make sure that even though you are incorporating the prop, make sure that prop is not the "star" of the photo and that is flows in naturally with the scene and with what your model is doing.

Here are 2 cool pose ideas straight from the Posing Workflow For Senior Boys guide:

1. Squatting

The squat is such an easy pose to do and it is also the perfect up-close portrait for framing! Have the senior squat down with either one knee on the ground or with both knees up like a catcher's stance. Then, you just need to play around with their hands once they rest their elbows on their knees to see what works best and what is most comfortable for them. Make sure to get a shot of them up close and one a bit further away with the landscape in the background.

2. Standing and leaning

Finding a great location for the senior to be photographed is very important in this stand and lean pose. You want to find a great ledge, window sill, stairs or even a unique building to lean against. The stand and lean pose is great because it can be very casual which is awesome for senior boys. The other hands that is not leaning can be put in his pocket and makes for a relaxed look.
