8 Tips To Take Awesome Indoor Sports Photography

Are you a sports photographer that shoots many indoor games such as basketball, hockey or volleyball? Many indoor sports are very fast paced and you are typically working with the funky lighting that comes with playing in an arena or gymnasium. Today, we want to share with you a few things to consider if you are an indoor sports photographer.

1. Make Sure You Have The Right Equipment

When it comes to which camera is best, it really depends on the photographer. As long as you are shooting with a reliable DSLR but you want to make sure you have good lenses. More importantly, you want to have a lens with a long zoom with a large aperture.

And just like any other type of photography, you want to make sure you have all the necessities including extra batteries, a backup memory card just in case, and you may even want to have a back up camera body if that is something you have. It is also important to have a handy gear bag that is easy to carry.

2. Arrive Early And Scope Out The Scene

There are many good reasons to get to the game early. First, you want to have time to scope out the venue, especially if you have never shot there before. It is good to help you understand where the best places to stand would be and who knows, you may even find a unique angle that you never had before.

Arriving early before game time could also beneficial because you can get some great pre-game photos of each team warming up together, having pre-game meetings or rituals. These types of photos are what help tell the entire story of the game from start to finish and it is a great time to capture photos of individual players.

3. Understand The Sport

You must know the game you are photographing. If you are shooting a basketball game, knowing when they are playing a zone defense or man-to-man is helpful so you know what you should be looking for. If you are familiar with the players it will be helpful to better realize when they are getting ready to pass to their top dunker. Is it better to stand on the home side or the visitor side. Remember that you are there to photograph the big picture - you are there to tell the story of the game from start to finish.

4. Be Aware And Cautious

It is always dangerous to be standing on the sidelines of a very fast-paced sporting event. Players run, jump and fall out of bounds all throughout the game and if you are not aware or your attention is elsewhere, you could get injured. Stay focused on the game and what is going on around you at all times.

5. Focus On Specifics

Many sports are action sports and you want to capture as many of those action shots as you can but some of the best sports photos are ones that focus on the little details. The sparkle in the players' eyes when he or she scores, or the numbers on the jersey of the player who finally got his chance in the game. Maybe you could even focus a shot on the ball or puck or the intense face that the coach has as he is in a huddle with his players.

Another great thing to remember is that a sporting event is not all about the game. You also want to capture the excitement of the fans, the mom and dad that are embracing when their son or daughter scored the winning shot or even the mascot as they excite the crowd.

6. Use Your DSLR Back Button Focus Feature

Most DSLRs have an option that allows you to assign auto focus functions to a button that is located on the back of the camera. When a player passes between you and the player you have been trying to focus on, typically your focus will be shifted to the new player in the frame. With back-button focus, all you have to do is remove your finger from the button when another player enters the frame. Pressing the back button again when the distracting player leaves the frame resumes your original focus quickly and easily.

7. Shutter Speed

It is best to start with a shutter speed of 1/500 and then adjust your settings accordingly until you get the look you want in your photos. Once you get it where you want, it will most likely be pretty consistent over the course of the entire game, since the lighting typically stays the same - unless the venue has windows that can bring in natural sunlight.

If you are using flash, determine the maximum shutter speed your flash will allow which is typically 1/250 (but be sure that you check your manual for "flash sync speed" just to be sure). Start with that and then adjust your aperture and ISO accordingly.

8. Try Out Different Angles

Be sure you get photos from different angles if you are able to. Try capturing some shots of players from down lower and also move higher to get ariel shots if you can. If you know the game, you will know when it is best to be where. Different angles will make for some great and unique shots... it is always best when you are able to mix it up at bit.

3 Tips To Pricing Your Wedding Photography Packages To Sell

Are you a wedding photographer that is trying hard to compete with the hundreds of photographers that are located in the same city as you? In today's world, where it is very easy to purchase a camera and begin a photography business, you want to make sure you stand out from the crowd.

Pricing your wedding photography packages is one of the most important things for your business because it is how you make your money but it also is one of the toughest things to set up. In the awesome BP4U Guide titled "The Business of Wedding Photography," photographer Brooke Bustillos discusses how to best price your photography packages and market them properly to engaged couples. The guide is so comprehensive; she also talks about and provides awesome tips on how she has created a successful business where she has photographed over 76 weddings in a year!

Today, we want to share with you 3 tips that Brooke has included in this guide to help you price your wedding photography packages to sell. Enjoy!

1. Get A Feel For What Other Photographers Charge In Your Area

The average client will spend roughly $2,000 for their wedding photography in Indianapolis but if you are in Chicago, the average client will spend about $3,000. This shows that it totally depends on what market you are located in for the price you should charge. You have to get a good feel for what people will pay in your area because you do not want to price yourself too low or too high.

2. Learn To Say No

Think about this: you are meeting with a client which you have already booked to discuss the specifics of their engagement photos. While with them, they say to you, "One of your competitors is willing to throw in an extra album for the same price as your first package." You must realize now that this client is most likely going to be a problem. You may not have thought so when you first booked them, but because they are STILL discussing the pricing after they have already agreed and booked with you, they will be the ones that will nit-pick everything during the wedding and even after the images have been delivered. Just tell them NO. Give them your prices and be done with it. Just remember, that is the price you have decided will help you to make the money you need to run your business successfully.

Keep in mind that there may be times when you will want to work around a client and their budget. If someone comes to you right off the bat and tells you exactly what their maximum budget is and that they have no room to extend it, and you feel like these people will be a great client, go for it. They have been upfront from the get-go, have not decided to book yet because they want to see if you would even agree to work with their budget. They understand and those are the clients you want. This is your business and you want to use your judgement for these types of price changes.

3. Keep Your Packages Short and Sweet

Try not to have too many different packages. Brooke says in this guide that she tries to have no more than 3 at a time because more than that tends to confuse people. When you have your packages listed out, be short and sweet and tell them exactly what they will get for the price of that specific package. Your goal is to get them to go for the middle package. Do not include everything in the first package and make your most expensive package include everything you offer. That way, your client will want to go for the middle package that you have priced perfectly that will most benefit you and your business as well as your clients.

Pricing is very important to your business, but you also need to consider how you market to your prospects and actually book the client. You also need to think about how you market yourself online. What does your web presence look like and do you make yourself likable? Are you on social media and do you have a quality website that shows off your work but also gives a prospect the information they are looking for when doing their research? You should also list your business on other websites, such as SnapKnot, to make sure you are reaching as many potential customers as you possibly can.

If you liked these 3 tips, there are SO MANY more offered in this 76-page guide, "The Business of Wedding Photography." If you purchase now, you can get it for only $49.99 (normally $149.99)!! What a great value for such valuable business tips.

Today, we wanted to share with you 2 of those basic tips that come directly out of this guide that will help you with your studio photography. We hope you enjoy.

1. Find A Space That Makes You Feel Comfortable

When it comes to finding a studio, you need to find one that makes you feel comfortable and gives you the space you need. Think about having a place that has enough room to take photos, but you also should have space for a desk and some chairs where you can bring in clients and discuss their needs with them. A location that your client can fix their hair and makeup with a nice full-length mirror is also a great extra to have.

You should also think about the type of natural light the studio brings in. If you are a natural light shooter, that extra light can be a huge plus. It is also a great idea to decorate the studio with your personality as well as your work samples so clients can see what it is you do.

2. What Backdrop Should You Use In A Studio?

Keyla with Grace Michael Photography prefers to use white walls over white backdrops because she gets better shadows on the walls. She will rarely shoot on a black backdrop but when she does, she tries to angle the subject so there is some dimension to the image. And when a photo is shot on a black background correctly, it can turn out stunning, especially when natural light is used.

3 Things To Think About If You Hire A Second Shooter

Many times when you are photographing a large event, such as a wedding, it is pretty much impossible for just yourself to capture every single special moment that is taking place throughout the event. Hiring a second shooter can help... they can give you the peace of mind that you need to know that you will have another set of eyes to photograph around the event and it also gives you peace of mind that you are doing all you  can to make sure that your client is happy with the photos that were captured.

Hiring a second shooter can be nerve-racking, especially if it is someone you have never worked with before, but if you plan ahead and the two of you are both on the same page, it will be a pleasant experience. Here are 3 things you must remember if you are going to hire a second shooter.

Where To Find A Second Shooter

If you need a second shooter, you want that person to be the best they can be. Remember, they will be working for you and their work ethic, skills and personality, whether good or bad, will reflect on your business. Try to think about various photographers that you know, possibly one that you have worked for in the past that may want to return the favor.

It is good to always be looking for second shooters that you can use. If you know you regularly will need the assistance of a second shooter because you work with so many large weddings, it may be beneficial to have a page on your site dedicated to second shooters and what you are looking for exactly.

Second shooters can vary in their photography. Perhaps it can be someone who is looking to expand their portfolio. Or, maybe it is someone who is newer to photography and trying to learn and see what shooting an entire wedding day is like. Maybe it is a seasoned photographer who is just looking to make some extra money on the side. No matter the type of person, you want to make sure that you can work well and trust this person to do their job right and who will be a great representative of your company name.

Make Sure To Have A Signed Contract

It is important to have a contact that your second shooter can sign upon agreement of the work to be done and the amount you will pay that person. If you use second shooters regularly, it may be great to have a contract template that you can change up depending on the situation and person you are hiring at the time.

Getting a contact signed before the event is important, even if the person is a good friend that you have worked with before. You never know what type of situation can occur and having that contract with the exact terms of the job will be there in case something happens such as the wedding getting canceled, etc.

The contract should include the entire scope of work that will be done during the job you have hired the second shooter for. You will want to list out what is expected of them, how much they will get paid, the date and time of the event and what happens in case the event is canceled, postponed or anything else. You also want to include any information about insurance, travel expense coverage, and anything else that you think is necessary.

Communication Is Key

Communication is key. Just like you will be communicating with your bride and groom before the wedding, you want to communicate with your second shooter who will be working with you. You want to make sure they have their contract and any other necessary documents and information regarding the event prior to the date of the actual event. They should know what to wear and what to expect from the specific venue you will be working at so they can plan ahead as well. If you know you will be working outside, it is good for them to know in case it is rainy, they need some specific equipment or simply a jacket in case it is chilly.

On the day of the event, make sure the two of you have a meeting at the venue to plan who will be shooting what, so you can both divide and conquer throughout the day.

Make sure your clients are happy, they love the work you have done and provided to them, and if they do not, help to figure out a way to make it right. Like we said before, word-of-mouth is very important and we all know that someone is more likely to tell everyone they know if they are unhappy or had an unpleasant experience with a service.

2. Stay On Your Clients Radar

Social media is huge and is a great way to keep in touch with your past and current clients. Post a sample of a family session and tag your client, comment on posts they make about current things that are going on in their lives. The more they see you and your business in front of them, the more they will remember the great work you did and when a friend or family member asks them about if they know of a photographer, you may just pop into their head since you stay in their radar.

Also be sure to send out emails with your current specials, really great blog posts you have posted on your website with new photo sessions you have done and even just emails to check in and see if there is anything you can help them with.

If you are just starting out on your photography journey, or you have recently stumbled across your passion for capturing amazing photographs of whatever it is you enjoy shooting, you want to learn the best practices, tips and tricks to be the best photographer you can be. Whether you want to start your own business or just take your photos as a hobby, here are 4 photography tips for beginners that we hope help you out!

1. Get A Camera That Suits You

You need to have a camera that works for the type of photography you do and that does not always mean you need the latest, most expensive camera on the market. Research all the cameras out there and choose one that fits your specific needs. If you are starting your own business, you may want to spend a little more than you would if you are simply wanting to take photos as a hobby. But, like we always say, it is not the size of the lens, it is how you use it.

2. Focus On A Specialty

It is important for your photography to really grow by figuring out what specialty you want to focus on. Of course you can always photograph other things, but having that focus is key to improving and learning the best ways to capture the subject you are focusing on. Do you really love the passion between a bride and groom on their wedding day? Focus on wedding photography. If you really prefer and love the work you do with still objects outdoors, focus on landscape photography. Your specialty is totally up to you and all depends on what your passion is. But with that said, as a photographer, the possibilities are truly endless and you can capture photos of anything that makes you happy.

3. Keep Learning

Whether you have been taking photos for the past year, or you literally just purchased your first camera, always continue to learn. Read blogs or photography books, take classes, talk with other photographers and learn what they do and why they do it. Whether you want to learn about your camera itself, techniques you can use to photograph the subject or objects you enjoy, or even learn more about different programs you can use for editing your work, the industry is always changing which means continuing to learn is an essential part.

4. Take Lots Of Photos

Take lots and lots of photos! Keep practicing and perfecting your craft. Just like with anything else, the more photos you take, the better you will become. Get out and explore new angles or try out a different lens or even scope out new locations that you have never been to and see what it looks like in photos. If you do photography as a hobby, carry your camera with you even if you are not planning on photographing something. You never know what you can find when you are not looking!

If learning is something that you want to be sure to do this year, we have tons of great guides you can easily buy and download about so many aspects of photography. 2 Factors To Consider When Photographing Senior Girls

One of the best parts of a senior's high school is the anticipation of their upcoming graduation and becoming an adult. Taking senior photos is one important part of that and so you want to be sure to capture the most special photos that you can.

When you are taking photos of a senior girl, you have to remember that they most likely will want their photos to be trendy, while capturing their interests and beauty. Stephanie Pana Photography provides some amazing tips in the BP4U Guide called Modern Posing For Senior Girls that is a must-have if you photograph seniors. (Also, be sure to check out our recent post on 2 cool pose ideas for senior boys)!

Here are 2 factors to consider when you are photographing senior girls that we wanted to share with you that are straight out of this awesome guide.

1. Facial Expressions

Facial expressions are one of the most important keys to a good portrait. The senior girl you are photographing can be so perfectly posed, but if she has a weird expression on her face, the whole image is ruined.

You can have your model go with a serious look, that you do not want to look angry but more so relaxed and you want it truly to be all about their eyes. Many times, when they are trying to be serious, they will either nail that expression perfectly, or they will feel silly and start laughing, which is another great facial expression to capture. The best smile you can capture in a photo is a natural one.

2. Incorporate Hobbies Or Other Interests

When you are able to incorporate the subjects hobbies or interests into their senior photos, it is really when you get to showcase who they really are. Many times, that will involve having a prop with them, whether it be a guitar, books, or even the sport or activity they do such as dancing, soccer or anything else. Make sure that even though you are incorporating the prop, make sure that prop is not the "star" of the photo and that is flows in naturally with the scene and with what your model is doing.

If you love these 2 factors to consider when photographing senior girls, and want other great ideas for a senior portrait session then the Modern Posing for Senior Girls is for you! Here Are 6 Reasons Why A Travel Photographer Needs A Tripod

A tripod can be a pain for a photographer. They are heavy and can be a pain to carry around with you - especially if you are going on a long hike or exploring during your travels. Even though they can be somewhat annoying, it is a very important piece of equipment for a travel or landscape photographer.

Here are 6 reasons why a travel photographer needs a tripod:

1. A tripod allows you to photograph at dawn and dusk.

Dawn and dusk typically offers awesome light, and this soft light can give a beautiful look to your photographs. Due to the low light conditions, you will not be able to hold the camera with your hands so in order to capture sharp images, and to avoid that pesky camera shake, you need to use a tripod.

2. A tripod allows you to photograph at night.

Taking photos at night without a tripod is pretty impossible. You really can not achieve a fast enough shutter speed just by raising your ISO - your photo will just not be sharp enough or have an acceptable level of noise for professional or personal use.

3. A tripod allows for artistic vision.

No matter what time of day it is, you may always find yourself wishing you had your tripod with you. If you are trying to photograph a body of water, waterfall or even just a fountain, and you want to be sure to capture the smooth look of the water, you will need to use neutral density filters which means you are limiting the amount of light that enters the camera. In turn, you will need to use a slower shutter speed and a tripod is always great to have on hand when using that speed!

4. A tripod can help you capture unique angles.

One of the best advantages of using a tripod is that it allows you to take photos at interesting angles and shoot from positions that you may not be able to otherwise.

5. A tripod can help you take better photos.

Another awesome thing about using a tripod is that you do not have to be constantly connected to your camera by having to always hold it. You can use your mobility to look more closely at the scene you are trying to shoot which in turn can make for some really amazing photos.

6. A tripod helps to support a flash.

Every once in awhile you will need to use your flash at a different position to the usual one mounted to the top of your camera. In these situations, a tripod is so essential to hold your flash in position.

1. Finding a Great Location

Time and creativity are key to choosing a location. There are tons of ways to find a studio rental, or you can really shoot boudoir photography anywhere - depending on the comfort level of the client. If they are open to unique places, perhaps and open field or forest would be awesome. Hotel rooms are also great.

Privacy is the main thing you want to remember when planning out a boudoir shoot. You always must be respectful of your clients comfort level and don't ever try to push them into a location they are not comfortable with. Lighting is one other thing you really must consider when looking for a specific location to shoot.
