6 Tips To Taking Beautiful Bridal Portraits

Bridal portraits are such a special time for the bride-to-be. She is so extremely happy and excited for her upcoming wedding and she feels beautiful in her wedding gown. As her wedding photographer, you want to make her feel relaxed so you can capture the most gorgeous photos of the bride ready to say 'I do.'

There are so many things to consider when taking bridal portraits, including the location of the shoot, the lighting, the details and even how you are going to have her pose. So today, we wanted to share these 6 tips with you to taking beautiful bridal portraits.

1. Get to know your bride.

It is so important when you are photographing anyone that you really need to know their personality a bit before you capture photos of them. When it comes to bridal portraits, it is good to know what she feels are her best qualities, what she loves about her wedding gown, or maybe she tells you that she is absolutely in LOVE with her bouquet and wants to showcase it in the photos. Getting to know the bride is so important and can even help with tip #2.

2. Help her to relax.

Having your photo taken can always be a little stressful for most people. Unless you are a model and used to having people snap pictures of you, it can feel weird or awkward to smile so long or stand in specific poses. If you are taking these bridal portraits on a separate date then the wedding, keep her excited and her mind off the photos by chatting with her along the way. Perhaps use this time to get to know her and the groom a little bit more so you are more prepared the day of the wedding. Keeping her talking is a great way to stay relaxed and not focused on the photos being taken.

If you are taking the bride's photos on the day of the wedding, you may find that the bride has a bit more on her mind as she awaits the ceremony that day. Remind her to relax her shoulders, take deep breaths and use this time to enjoy the gorgeous wedding gown she is wearing. Just like we mentioned before, try and keep conversation going to keep her mind of the photos, but remember the nerves that she is already feeling.

3. Shoot variations of every pose.

When you have the bride set in a pose you both love, be sure you capture that pose from many different angles. Every angle can make the photo unique and you may find that one angle stands out beautifully from the rest. Along with capturing different angles, make sure you also have the bride focus in different directions, tilt her head a different way, or even change up how she is holding the bouquet.

4. Make sure the lighting is right.

Natural light from outdoors is always wonderful but if you are shooting indoors, you want to make sure you have enough light. It is good practice to scope out the space you will be shooting at before the day of, so you know ahead of time what to expect. Take into consideration if there are windows that allow a large amount of natural light in the room or whether you need to bring extra lighting with you.

5. Shoot from above.

Shooting from a little higher than the bride is always good to remember. This will make sure you get the best angle because if you are lower than the bride you could catch a double chin or get an unpleasant shot of nostrils that is not always the most photogenic part to photograph.

6. Capture all the little details.

Does the bride have a beautiful necklace on that was her grandmothers that she simply adores? Perhaps her wedding gown has a section of intricate lace or maybe the bottom of her shoes have blue rhinestones that spell out 'bride.' Be sure to capture all of these little details as these are the items she will want to remember for years to come.

4 Tips To Make Your Fall Photography Great

Fall is a wonderful time of year to take outdoor portraits. The temperatures are a bit cooler and the colors are just spectacular. Although taking portraits outdoors can happen all year round, this time of year is pretty great and can make for beautiful photos that your clients are sure to love. The dramatic landscapes that you can capture are nothing short of inspiring and it is such a fabulous time of year to find beautiful backdrops perfect for wedding, engagement or family portraits.

Since we know so many of you will be out capturing some beautiful shots this fall, we wanted to share 4 tips to help make sure your fall photography is as great as it can be!

1. Remember to plan your day around an earlier sunset.

The days become shorter as the fall temperatures set in so you want to make sure you plan for less hours in the afternoon to capture photos and an earlier sunset. If your client wants to have a portrait or two taken right at sunset, you need to know what time the sun sets and how long you have before it is dark so you can plan accordingly.

2. Visit your shooting location a day or two before.

During the fall, the leaves can fall from their branches, change colors and make that big gorgeous tree look different day by day. If you are hoping to capture the most beautiful landscape shot, you want to make sure that landscape looks exactly the way you had hoped when you first came across it, right? Or maybe, you are planning a portrait session for your client outside in front that same specific tree, and you can't wait to show them how gorgeous the colors will be in their photos.

Do not go scout out that location more than a day or two before you actually plan to photograph it. If you wait any longer, you may come back to find out that all the leaves have fallen and it looks completely different than you thought!

3. Don't overlook those overcast days.

Even if the sky is a bit gray, that does not mean your fall portrait session will not be amazing. Having the overcast sky can give for a different look than a sunny day... the sun will not be drowning out the colors and the shadows will be softer. This can be great if you are shooting outside for something like a wedding or family portrait or even if you are just out capturing amazing landscape shots.

4. Think of locations unique to fall.

The hues of oranges, yellows, and browns are the first thing to come to mind when you think of the outdoors during the fall but take a moment to stop and think outside of the box. Perhaps there is a local farmers market nearby that has colorful fruits and flowers, orange pumpkins and beautiful greenery with a very rustic outdoorsy feel. That could be the perfect location to photograph a fall engagement session you have. Maybe you are doing family portraits... the pumpkin patch could be a fun and unique fall location. Is there a fall festival that happens every year? Take a day to enjoy and bring your camera along and see the amazing fall photos you can get.

Why It's Beneficial Not To Include Photography Prices On Your Website

We all know that pricing your photography is one of the most important parts of your business. Your prices can make or break you as a company. You want to make sure you have prices that help you cover all of your business expenses but can also make some profit as well. You also want to set your rates so high that you are above all of your competition but you also don't want to undervalue yourself either. Be sure you check out this blog post on 4 things to consider when you are pricing your photography

Once you have secured your prices, do you include those prices on your website for everyone to see or not? Brooke Bustillos, a photographer who collaborated on the BP4U Guide called "How To Start Your Photography Business," suggests that you DO NOT include your prices on your website. Why, do you ask? Read below to find out.

What reason does Brooke have for not including your pricing on your website? It is simple.... if you do not have your photography prices online when your customer is doing research, then they HAVE to reach out to you in order to get those prices. This can be very beneficial to your business for this reason:

You Get Their Contact Information

When they reach out to you to find out about your prices, you automatically have gotten an email address, phone number (or both) so that you can keep in touch with that person. Even if they do not book with you right away, who's to say they will not book with you in the next year or two... or the next time someone in their family is looking to take portraits or is in need of a wedding photographer?

With their contact information, you can add them to your monthly or quarterly newsletters that talk about your business, show off some of your recent work, etc. You can even send them deals, discounts, mini-sessions and other offers you are having throughout the year. Staying in touch with a potential client is always beneficial... you never know when they will need a photographer or know someone else who needs one and will recommend you!

Do you love this tip and want more to make sure you are prepared with your own photography business? Do you want to know how best to increase your prices and the best things to blog about for your business? How about the best ways to advertise and what social media sites you should be interacting on daily?

5 Ways To Better Capture Emotions In Your Photos

It can be very hard to capture emotion in photography. Not only do you have to be right in the center of the action but your timing also has to be perfect to get the shot at the right time. No matter what it is you are photographing, finding that emotion is important. Perhaps you are capturing the way the groom feels when he first sees his wife walk down the aisle in her beautiful wedding gown. Maybe you are traveling and want to capture the culture of a specific city you are visiting or the laughter of children as they play at the park. It could even be the look of a mother when she holds her newborn baby.

We love the emotion this groom is showing as he sees his bride for the first time on their wedding day! This is the perfect example of wonderful emotion captured by the photographer, Andria Lindquist. We found this photo on SnapKnot.

We love the emotion this groom is showing as he sees his bride for the first time on their wedding day! This is the perfect example of wonderful emotion captured by the photographer, Andria Lindquist. We found this photo on SnapKnot

Whatever type of emotion you are capturing, you want to do it the best possible way you can. Here are 5 tips we found on FStoppers where famous sport and music photographer Michael Zagaris joins Marc Silber on "Advancing Your Photography" and gives us his essential tips to come up with touching pictures. Read through the tips below and then watch the video from Marc!

1. Connect With People

When you are photographing someone, it is easier to get those more intimate moments when the person you are photographing trusts you. Using a camera with a large lens that stands out can be intimidating to some, so it is important for you to blend in and not stick out from the crowd. If you need help with this, read on to number two below.

2. Experience The Moment

To truly experience the moment, you must be involved and blend in with the crowd. For example, if you are photographing a wedding, you want to blend in so those you are capturing in photos do not even realize you are there.

3. Understand Your Equipment

You need to be sure you know exactly how to work your equipment because if you are going to capture true emotion, you have to be able to do it quickly. You will not have time to fumble around with the camera settings or your lens. If you have to think about what aperture to use and how to adjust it while the emotion is happening right in front of you, you are most likely going to miss it. It must become second nature for you to adjust all your camera settings quickly so you can be sure not to miss any of those special moments or emotions you are trying hard to capture.

4. Bring Your Vision To Reality

Framing has a huge impact on conveying that emotion you are capturing. For example, using a wide-angle lens while shooting close will give a sense of proximity and include more of the surroundings, or using leading lines to frame your subject will help it stand out more.

You can make emotions more intense or more neutralized by your composition. Make sure before you begin shooting that you analyze the scene, anticipate what and where you want to photograph and do all your planning ahead. Having a specific vision in mind before you begin taking photos of the moment will help you to capture the emotion you are looking to get.

5. Shoot What You Love

In the video below, you will hear Zagaris say that photography is a beautiful art that gets us in places otherwise inaccessible to most of us. This is so very true. As a photographer, you have the chance to experience things that other people are not able to. Be sure to embrace that, but the only way to capture that emotion you want is when you actually LOVE what you do and photograph what it is you love. If you love weddings and seeing people in love, shoot weddings. If you have a passion for travel, capture emotion while visiting new places. Whatever it is you love, capture it!

3 SEO Mistakes That You Do Not Want To Make

Doing great SEO for your business is difficult to do, especially since you are so busy with so many other things. With that said, Search Engine Optimization is very important. You want to optimize your website and blog for that top search rank so potential customers will be able to find you first when doing a quick google search. You must work smarter than your competing photography businesses around you.

There are many common mistakes people make when doing SEO. With many people out there making these mistakes, you want to be sure you do not so you can trump the competition. Here are three mistakes that you should always try to avoid.

You Use Your Name To Optimize

Many photography business names are the actual name of the photographer... for example Ryan Cooper Photography. You want to make sure you are optimizing yourself in a search as your ENTIRE business name, not just your first and last name. Start optimizing your blog and website with your whole business name, and you will most likely find yourself show up high in a google search.

You Don't Think About What Your Client Would Search For

You have to be able to predict what your target market is likely to search for and you have to make sure you rank for those specific types of searches. Think about what someone who is looking for a portrait photographer would search for. As a photographer yourself, you may think that "portrait photographer" would be the best keyword phrase to use, but is that really what others who are not photographers would think about? Instead, they may search "kid photographer" or "family photographer." And if you rank well for "portrait photography" since that is the label you put all over your website (instead of "family photographer" or "kid photographer," you are going to miss out on a lot of potential traffic.

You Consider Yourself International

Unless you have reached a very specific and high level in the industry, you are not an international photographer. Those who truly have an international presence know who they are (and probably do not need our advice whatsoever). For the rest of the photographers out there, you may book a random travel gig here or there, but keep in mind that your business must first start where you are located.  In order to get yourself started and well known in your location, you need to rank well in your area. You can do this by including a focus in your SEO on targeting your immediate location by mentioning that area in your website copy. You can even do this by getting featured in local publications. With that type of marketing in your region, you have the potential to grow your business great around your region.

If you are doing your marketing online, posting your blogs a few times a week and update your website regularly, you need to make sure your SEO is working the best it can for your business. Make sure you are not making these 3 mistakes so you are marketing to your full potential.

2 Ways To Keep Everyone Relaxed During a Family Portrait Session

It is very special to be able to capture photos of a family together in a gorgeous portrait. Knowing that these photos will be showcased throughout their home and looked at for years to come is so meaningful and most likely a large reason you love doing what you do. You have photographed a time in this families life that they want to remember forever that shows the love and special bond that they share.

While at their portrait session, giving the family fun ways to pose and to best capture their personality and love can be difficult if you have some that hate to be photographed. The Posing Workflow For Family Portraits, a guide that is a collaboration between Nicole Speer Photography and BP4U, has some great tips from a professional photographer on how to keep your clients relaxed and happy during their portrait session. Today, we want to share 2 tips that come directly from the guide.

PURCHASE THE POSING WORKFLOW FOR FAMILY PORTRAITS NOW!

1. Move Around

When you are doing posed shots, remember that people tend to be a little more stiff. Even though you want to get posed shots, it is good to try and get them family moving around, walking or even interacting with each other while you snap photos. Having them move around, talk to one another, walk hand in hand or even laughing together can help the shots be much more candid and will in turn look less stiff and planned.

2. Keep Your Conversation Going

Talking to your clients are a good way to keep them distracted from the fact they are posing for photos. Tell a silly story that you know the children will love, or some fun jokes that you know. If everyone is enjoying the time, it will keep things looking more natural and will keep your clients relaxed. As you talk together, just be sure to keep snapping those photos, because you never know when you will get the most perfect shot.
